WHO'S BILL GUTZWILLER?

I work mainly in the pastel medium because the brilliant color and dry application of pastel are ideal for painting in the field 'en plein air'.   I put these characteristics to particularly good use during my years of cruising on my boat, and on my far-ranging travels throughout the Caribbean, along the sea coasts of New England, Florida, and the Great Lakes, and during trips around the United States, and to Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Scotland, France, and Switzerland in recent years.

Here I am with my portable art gear ready to go.  My easel, pastels, and paper fit into a custom designed backpack which includes a stool for greater freedom and comfort in selecting the ideal vantage point for a particular painting.  The entire rig fits nicely into the overhead rack of an airplane, and leaves hands free to carry regular luggage.

I studied painting at Silvermine Guild in Norwalk, Connecticut, the Milwaukee Art Institute, and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.   I've worked with eminent pastelists Hermann Margulies, Alan Flattmann, Robert Hoffman, Elizabeth Mowry, and Frank Federico.   I have shown my work in expositions in the Midwest, Florida, and the Caribbean.  I've won many awards, including Best-of-Show at the Caribbean Colour exhibition on St. Thomas, and another Best-of-Show Award at the 75^th Anniversary Exhibition of the Milwaukee Sketch Club.  Since 1989 I've been showing my work in semi-annual one-man shows at my home studio/galleries.  I'm a member of the Pastel Society of America, the Milwaukee Sketch Club, Marco Island Outdoor Artists, and Naples Art Association.  

My paintings hang in homes and offices throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, and Europe.  In July 2003 "International Artist Magazine" designated me a Master Pastel Artist of the World.
